Founder/ Business Owner/ Operator

J. Andrew Armenteros

Andrew is a disabled vet that moved into the Boone area (Vilas) three years ago. He met his wife who lived in Foscoe and began seeing some of the struggles that the businesses in the area were dealing with. The ebb and flow of population; from students at Appalachian State University, tourists, and vacation home owners, and of course the ones that have never left the hollar, Boone and it's surrounding towns are always in flux. With the pandemic making nearly everything a struggle, Andrew founded Totes Marketing SEO to help local businesses stand out and grow their customer base in order to thrive.

The Best SEO formula.

When the internet first started to become mainstream, just about any website could gain significant notoriety by simply being unique and filling a need. No emphasis was given to the quality of the site, nor how much information was actually given, as long as it was colorful and entertaining.

That has drastically changed over the last two decades, as more emphasis is placed on natural word searches and high-quality SEO. To add to the complexity of finding the information that people are searching for, the majority of searches on the internet today are comprised of questions. That means that the astute website developer/SEO needs to focus their online presence to answer those questions as simply as possible, while still interjecting keywords that will rank a website head and shoulders above the competition.

This tendency is connected to the fact that individuals are using technology to ask precise questions, such as voice commands on Siri. They are also putting more detail in their searches in order to discover their desired answer faster and with greater accuracy.

From an SEO standpoint, these keywords are more beneficial to a content producer. Because lengthier, more specialized keywords are less competitive but more relevant, they are easier to rank for and, as a result, are more likely to convert at a greater rate.

To summarize, the goal of ranking higher on Google is not to rank for keywords that remain consistent over time but to focus on quality content for a broader number of natural language searches, which are continually expanding and changing swiftly.

So, when asked:

How long does it take for SEO to really take shape?

The answer: it really depends.

That truth may hurt a little bit, yes. There are so many variables, but I will attempt to break it down Barney style so you can begin to understand the gravitas of the answer.

So where do we begin? It’s a fair observation that one website will be vastly different than the next, even if it focuses on and serves the same competing market and/or client base. The focus of doing SEO for one page will steer the overall presence for not only the client but the public at large who are searching for their service. This would easily include the quality and amount of content that you create, the type of backlinks that are added, and of course the keywords that are used to drive the potential traffic to the site. The overall age of the site can also have a vastly different weight given to it, as it is crawled by different browser algorithms.

Research and discovery for the site are always going to remain paramount in anchoring the website. This is the framework for all the remaining content to be built on. So going over the words, phrases, media, and internal and external links with a fine-tooth comb is necessary before it should be considered for its first publishing. But if all is done well, then the return on the time invested in your research will begin to show after the first month or so.

After you've created the framework and have a deep sense that it's practically perfect, you should focus on developing stronger content.  This includes all of your blog entries, articles, company data, FAQ pages, and more. This phase of the work is usually the longest, and quite frankly, the anxiety is intense.  However, if you have the ability to engage in continually strengthening your content, you will drastically reduce the amount of time involved in the long run, allowing you to focus on the next level of boosting the website.

As said before, time is the measure of how well the website will rank, and it may be months. Slowly but surely, however, the site will start to rank for the phrases and keywords that the target searches are looking for, and traffic will begin to pour in. Now it’s time to convert the traffic into leads and establish new goals by linking the highest-ranking analytics to a competent social media strategy. Now the two will begin to feed off each other, and the website is well on its way to dominating the searches.

Those who have worked in the SEO industry long enough will tell you that it can take upwards of 6 months to really get the ROI of putting in the work. As long as it was done with the right amount of research, the long-term investment of it will make itself clearly evident over the next 6 months, leading up to a full year.

That may be hard for some clients to hear since many of them want instant gratification, but it’s the honest truth of the matter. No marketing gimmick is going to satiate that need, so try and walk them through it. Gently of course. Keep working on it, update them about what’s happening, and always work on your new relationship.
